Theoretical Foundation & Design Skills

Course leader evaluation

Course assessment by students

Coordinate course sections to ensure consistent content Are students getting same course content?

Course leaders assigned.

Foundation course instructors met to review current course content and to identify key concepts covered in foundation level courses, that should be emphasized. A memo was written containing a list of these design concepts and vocabulary, suggesting that should be taught in all the foundation courses with the goal that students will carry these basic design "abc's" with them as they take their 2nd, 3rd, & 4th year courses. A list of resources (textbooks and periodicals) was also created for foundation level faculty.

Course leader to hold periodic meetings with faculty and adjuncts

A curriculum matrix will be developed to document at what point in the semester design "abc's" will be covered in the 100 & 200 level courses. The goal is to help faculty see how and when course content overlap occurs, and how it can be used to reinforce the basic design concepts. The goal is that our students will "carry" this knowledge from course to course.

Need to coordinate sections of typography courses Students continue to have weak typographic skills

A new text book was introduced in all AD117 typography courses, which is also to be a resource in the 217 & 317 type classes.

AD117, formerly taught in a studio class, has been modified to include both traditional studio skills as well as work in Quark Xpress. Students are now able to use their typographic knowledge in practical exercises.

Modify 1st semester type class with computer assignments

Install 400 Adobe fonts in all labs

Upgrade font management software

Recent student shows revealed over emphasis on imagery, with typography a secondary element.

We need to re- focus on typographically driven design solutions.

Need to concentrate on quality, rather than quantity of fonts.

Font management software is available, but students are not taught how to use it. We need to teach it. An instructions handout for all students and faculty.
